Who is at risk?

Anyone who has experienced an allergic reaction in the past is at higher risk of having a severe allergic reaction in the future. The risk is also higher for people who have asthma, as well as those who have allergies specific to food products.

It is estimated that as many as 4% of Canadians have food allergies. In fact, 50% of Canadians know someone who has a serious food allergy.

You can help reduce your risk of having a severe allergic reaction by avoiding your allergy triggers whenever possible and carrying an EpiPen® with you at all times.

Severe allergic reactions are unpredictable

It’s important to remember that the severity of previous reactions cannot predict the severity of future reactions. This means that any future reactions can be the same, better or worse than a previous reaction. In fact, a study showed that approximately only 1 out of 5 people who died as a result of either a food or insect allergy had ever experienced a severe allergic reaction before.

That’s why it’s important to be prepared by carrying an EpiPen® Auto-Injector at all times.

Severe reactions are likely to recur

Having a severe reaction in the past makes it likely that you will experience another in the future. In fact, a study showed that 3 out of 4 people who reported having a severe allergic reaction had previously experienced at least one severe reaction.

Be prepared. If you’ve ever experienced a severe allergic reaction, it’s important that you have easy access to an EpiPen® wherever you go.
