Anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, occurs when a person is exposed to an allergen (an allergy-causing substance).1,8
The immune system usually protects the body against dangerous bacteria and viruses. In a person who has allergies, the immune system is oversensitive. When the person comes in contact with an allergen, the immune system launches a response that causes allergy symptoms. In some cases, the reaction becomes severe and is called anaphylaxis.8
Several factors can influence the likelihood and/or severity of allergic reactions such as1,9:
- Exercise
- Alcohol
- Menstruation (periods)
- Psychological burden
- Sleep deprivation
- Medications
- Viral infection
